Good morning,

How many miles are on the car?

These codes are usually a result of oil sludge in the variable cam actuators.

The oil system should be flushed of all debris with a pressure machine that gets the inside of the passages clear of the sludge.

This could also be a worn timing chain as well.

I would start there before going to other areas.

Roy

P0008: Engine Position System Performance Bank 1
P0009: Engine Position System Performance Bank 2

Related Vehicles: 2009 - 2011 Acadia, Enclave, Outlook, Traverse 3.6L

Notes/Hints:

Poor maintenance or engine mechanical conditions, such as improper engine oil level, condition and type, worn camshaft timing components, low engine oil pressure, or sludge can effect these codes.
Some Techs are reporting new aftermarket timing chains stretched with only 15k miles and tensioners allowing the chain to jump. Always use high quality parts that meet OEM specifications.
A single failed camshaft actuator or solenoid will not set these codes.
Multiple actuator codes in both banks indicate a primary timing chain problem or a slipped crankshaft reluctor wheel.
Preliminary Tasks:

Follow any TSB recommendations.
Repair any other Camshaft Position Actuator Solenoid or Camshaft Position Sensor codes first.
Verify the ECM has the most up-to-date software and calibrations installed.
Diagnosis:

1. If the timing chain components have NOT been replaced, replace the timing chain components. If the timing chain components have been replaced, proceed to the next step.
--> If the code does not reset, the repair is complete.
--> If the code resets proceed to the next step.

2. Recheck the timing alignment marks. If the intermediate chain sprocket timing window is difficult to see use a camera to verify the timing marks. Chain tensioners should not be extended over 3/8".
--> If any problems are found, make the necessary repairs.
--> If NO problems are found, inspect the crankshaft reluctor wheel for slippage.

Should not need a timing chain. They are good for about 150,000.

I would get the oil system flushed out.

You need a flush not a change. That is done with special equipment.

That is not a flush as I stated. It is where they drain the oil and put a machine in where the oil filter goes and the drain plug. It forced a heated cleaning agent throughout the motor internal ports to rid the passages of sludge.

There is no additive that can flush out the passages.
