Yep, you need to push the new fluid in by the drainplug. Here is what they say you need to do. VW G 055 540 A2 (latest VW-approved ATF for the 09G transmission)
Filling Procedure
The transmission is filled from the fill port using a hand pump.
Install the drain plug/overflow tube.
Pump ATF into the transmission until it begins to run back out.
Start the engine.
Hold the brake and shift:
P
R
N
D
Manual ranges
Back to Park
Pause 3–5 seconds in each gear.
Leave the engine idling.
Fluid Level Check
The critical part is checking the level at the correct fluid temperature.
ATF Temperature
35–45°C (95–113°F)
With:
Engine idling
Vehicle perfectly level
Transmission in Park
Remove the drain plug:
A thin stream that changes to a drip: Level is correct.
Nothing comes out: Add more fluid until it begins to drip.
A heavy stream continues: Allow it to drain until it becomes a slow drip, then reinstall the plug.
