My ECM is bad, and mechanic wanted to charge me $3,000.00. I did my research and no way it should cost that much. And it's not hard to do it at all do I'm doing it myself. Ordered the ECM. Waiting for its arrival. But in order for it to work I have to get keys with the new one? Or can I just go to a locksmith and have the reprogram the one I have? Thanks

Hello, most new or remanufactured ECMs need to be preprogrammed to the VIN number of the vehicle, but some companies now are doing plug and play type ECM replacements, as for the keys and the security system, yes there are a lot of locksmiths now that can program keys and the security system. If you have the correct scan tool almost anyone can do it these days. It just takes a scan tool that has the option to do all that. Just make sure and ask about the security system too when you call. Thats seems to be more of an issue, but the keys will need to programmed too. If you have only key fobs, there may be instructions in your vehicles grove box manual to do key fobs by yourself. $3,000.00 is a lot of money for an ECM that only cost $800.00 dollars. But that's because his scan tool probably cost him $5,000.00 for key and security system programming options.
Here is our guide to security system resets, but I'm not sure this applies in your situation. Also, there is a company that sends out preprogrammed ECMs, again plug and play units. I have heard some good things about them. Not sure they would work in every application, but they do have your cars ECM listed preprogrammed for $845.00 and less depending on the part number.
