Two weeks ago my check engine light came on so I went to AutoZone and got a free engine scan. They told me it was the catalytic converter. More specifically, the sheet they printed says "Code P0430 indicates that the Bank 2 Catalyst System efficiency was below threshold for a predetermined period of time." I have only driven about 175 miles in those two weeks to and from school. How long can/should I wait before this needs to be fixed? The mechanic at AutoZone said it wasn't a pressing issue since the light just came on. I need my car for school so I want to wait until I am home on break to get this fixed which may be a few more weeks. I don't drive it often while I am at school, just the 75 miles to get there from my house in Richmond.

Hello, I'm Danny.

You should be alright for a few weeks. Basically, You would fail a smog test by having the check engine light on. You might notice a slight drop in mpg. You should really only be concerned if the internals of the converter dislodge/break up and plug the system. Here is a tutorial for you to read:

Hope this helps and thanks for using 2CarPros.

Hello, one other thing is; you may want to have someone check to see if that bank 2 is running rich. This can be caused by a misfire happening on that bank. A check of the oxygen sensor signals on that side of the engine can verify that it is actually a bad cat and not a sensor or misfire causing this problem. Catalytic converters usually go bad because of a rich running condition which causes the catalytic converter to melt down.
