Hey everyone! So back with an issue again, unfortunately. I went to get gas at the station and after turning on the car and attempting to shift the car from park to drive, it would not budge. This “stuck” issue has been occurring I would say pretty disproportionately for the last month, sometimes it will get stuck, sometimes it will not. I went to school this morning, parked, drove to get lunch, then went to the gas station. Before the gas station, shifting had no problems, so there is no certain pattern as to when this happens, but at the gas station I tried to nudge it about ten times and it would not budge at all until it finally did. What can this be? I am seeing a shift interlock actuator issue online and the part is pretty cheap, recently I have the checked the transmission fluid color and level and everything looks normal. So is this actuator my problem?

HI and thanks for using 2CarPros. Com.

Most commonly, the shift interlock isn't the problem, but rather the brake light switch. When this happens (it will not shift from park) confirm the brake lights are working. The park lock solenoid gets power through the brake light switch, so if it fails, you cannot remove it from park.

If you find the brake lights are working, then I would suspect the park lock solenoid.

If you determine one is bad, here are the directions for replacing both. First is the brake light switch. Picture 1 correlated with these directions.

REMOVAL
1. Disconnect the battery ground cable.

2. Remove the BPP switch.
1 Disconnect the electrical connector.
2 Remove the self-locking pin.
3 Remove the BPP switch from the brake master cylinder push rod.

INSTALLATION
1. To install, reverse the removal procedure.

Here are the directions for the park lock solenoid (park interlock). The remaining pictures correlate with these directions.

Brake Shift Interlock Actuator-Floor Shift

Removal
1. Remove the center console.
2. Remove the-ignition/shifter interlock cable from the floor shift.
1. Disconnect the cable from the bucket.
2. Disconnect the cable from the shift cam.
3. Remove the LH lower instrument panel trim.
4. Disconnect four electrical connectors.
5. Remove the steering column support bracket.
1. Remove the diagnostic electrical connector bolts.
2. Remove the steering column support bracket bolts.
6. Remove the nuts and lower the steering column.
7. Disconnect the shift interlock electrical connector.
8. Remove the bolts.
9. Remove the ignition/shifter interlock cable and actuator assembly.

Installation

1. NOTE: Check for correct interlock operation. The ignition key should be removable only with the trans-axle range selector lever in park. The trans-axle range selector lever should be locked in the PARK position with the key removed.

Follow the removal procedure in reverse order.

I could not confirm that the brake lights were working at the time when the shifter got stuck, but after it finally shifted to drive and I got home, I had my neighbor check that the brake lights were working when I pressed the brake pedal, and indeed they were. So check the park lock solenoid?

Hi.
If you drove it home, that tells me you got it out of park. Therefore, the switch most likely was working at that time. You need to check the brake lights when you cannot shift from park.

Let me know what you find.

Take care,
Joe

Yeah, I mentioned that in the post, I got it to shift. But that was after trying to shift it about fifteen times to drive and it would not budge. But I did not think to check the brake lights when I was at the gas station, when the shifts would not move.

I understand. The best I can suggest is to wait until it happens again to check the brake lights. Otherwise, we may be replacing parts that are good.

So guess what happened? My parents tried to use my car but it was stuck in park, I took advantage of the situation and checked to see if the brake lights were working as my mom pressed on the brake pedal, and they do not. I guess they are working randomly I just have not noticed. I will check the fuses and probably switch out the brake light switch.

Perfect timing. It is most likely either the switch is bad or out of adjustment. Inspect it before replacing it to make sure it is tight and making contact with the brake pedal. I attached the directions for replacement in the earlier link. However, if you need anything other than what I provided, let me know. Please let me know how things work out for you and if you have other questions.

By the way, I feel confident it is not a fuse. That would fail all the time. However, I have been wrong in the past and will again in the future. LOL I just keep trying my best.

Take care,
Joe

Check this out. Was stuck in the beginning of the video, as soon as I moved the camera to my foot on the pedal, it shifted. Then those last two times I tried to shift it was stuck again.

I do not. Manually actuate the switch to see if it turns the lights on. It is just a button. Also, make sure the switch is tight. If the switch still does not turn the lights on, check for power to the switch. It should always have power, even with the key off.

Joe
PS: You would have gotten a kick out of watching me watch the video. I was turning the computer trying to get my bearings on how I was acclimated with positioning.

Haha, I took a video of the upper brake light behind the back seat, positioned my phone as best as I could to get a view of it since there is literally no one to stand behind my car right now and check if the brake lights are working. There is only like small lights and flashes, does not seem normal to me. What do you think?

After I carefully inspected the connector going into the brake switch once I removed it, I noticed there was moisture on the connector and the two prongs from the switch in which it goes into, I am guessing that is the culprit?

This was my fault for lubricating the entire area under my steering wheel, the joints and the pedals I sprayed white lithium grease all over. I am guessing this is what ultimately ruined these switches, but! I made a discovery just a few minutes ago, the brakes completely stopped working and my car has not been shifting for the last twenty minutes that we have been talking about this. Now that it got a little darker, I can see if the rear brake light turns on or not from the rear view mirror, if I place my foot on the pedal even the slightest, the light switches on and I was able to shift to drive. Obviously something is wrong if the sensibility of the pedal/switch is this sensitive, literally just laying my foot on the pedal with minimum weight, the light comes on, if I press any harder, light will not come on at all. Is there any way I can adjust this or do I have to switch the entire brake switch and cable?

Hi again. I found it! I knew there was a recall on these vehicles for a faulty brake light switch and wiring. It has been so long, I just was not sure. However, I found it. You need to contact a Ford dealership and confirm that the recall procedures were never done to your vehicle. They will need your vehicle identification number (VIN). If was never done, repairs will be free of charge. Note: There are two separate recalls regarding this issue (from 2004 that is why I could not remember). Take a look through these recalls. I have attached both for you to review.

Owner Letter
Q. Why are you recalling these vehicles?

A. We have found an unacceptably high rate of potential failure in the stop lamp switch and/or associated wiring on these vehicles. Customers will be notified to take their cars into a Ford or Lincoln Mercury dealer to have the stop lamp switch replaced with a more robust design and a wiring harness repair.

Q. What happens in the affected vehicles?

A. In some cases, the stop lamp switch can fail, causing the car's brake lights to either stay on, or not come on at all, regardless of the position of the brake pedal. If the stop lamp switch fails, and the brake lights do not come on, then the vehicle cannot be shifted out of park.

Q. What about vehicles built before the 2000 model year? What about 2004 cars?

A. Taurus and Sable vehicles built before model year 2000 had a different switch design. The switch was changed for the 2000 model year. This switch was used through February 2003. Design improvements were implemented in March 2003 and are currently in production in the 2004 vehicles.

Q. Why are fixed pedal and adjustable pedal vehicles affected in 2000 MY vehicles and only adjustable pedal vehicles affected in 2001 - 2003 MY vehicles?

A. Design improvements for fixed pedal vehicles were implemented for 2001 MY vehicles. Design improvements for adjustable pedal vehicles were not implemented until March 2003.

Q. What happened in the first recall (01S08) of these cars? Why wasn't the problem fixed right the first time?

A. The original service action included only vehicles equipped with the optional adjustable pedal assemblies. Investigation in 2001 concluded that grease from the adjustable pedal assembly was migrating to the switch and causing it to malfunction. The service fix involved removing the exposed grease. However, we have now found that grease in the mechanism can continue to cause the concern. In addition, the possible wiring harness concern being addressed in this action was not completely understood at the time of the initial recall.

Vehicle Sensors and Switches Sensors and Switches - Lighting and Horns Brake Light Switch Technical Service Bulletins Recalls and Campaigns Recall 04V106000: Stop Lamp Switch/Wiring Defect
RECALL 04V106000: STOP LAMP SWITCH/WIRING DEFECT
DEFECT: Certain passenger vehicles are being recalled to correct a problem with a malfunctioning stop lamp switch and/or associated wiring. This malfunctioning could render the stop lamps inoperable or cause them to stay on all the time. This could cause confusion to a following driver, which could lead to a crash. In addition, if the switch and/or associated wiring fail in the open position, the brake lights will not actuate and the driver will not be able to shift the vehicle out of "Park." If they fail in the closed position, the brake lights will remain on, which will not allow the speed control to be activated. This could also cause the battery to discharge.

REMEDY: Dealers will remove the stop lamp switch and associated wiring assembly and install a newly designed stop lamp switch and wire assembly. The manufacturer has reported that owner notification began on April 5, 2004. Owners may contact Ford at 1-800-392-3673.
