Engine will idle but shuts off when in gear and you press the accelerator?

The vehicle lost RPMs and fell on its face when merging onto the interstate. The engine didn't shut off or throw any codes. It still runs while in park and will move at idle but wants to shut off if you push the accelerator. A transmission shop has already said it's an engine problem and not the transmission. They said it is probably a bad sensor somewhere. Again, there are no codes (Snap-on code reader). I think it could be a throttle position sensor but without any codes I am somewhat at a loss. I am not a mechanic but know a few things. With all the sensors it "could be" I need some help.

Hi,

If it were a throttle position sensor, it would set a code. Also, I agree with the transmission shop.

My first thought is you have a weak fuel pump. If you haven't checked pressure, that is where I would start.

Additionally, I attached the manufacturer's fuel pressure specifications below. Try this and let me know what is found. Also, if you have other questions, let me know that as well.

That was a secondary concern as I thought more about it. I know that my girl (it's her car) will run the tank to almost empty and only put the minimal amount of fuel in to get her to and from work. I have advised her against this many times telling her that she will burn up the fuel pump if she continues to do that. But to answer your question, no I have not checked the pressure. The car has been towed from the transmission shop to another general mechanic's shop for the time being. I am currently working with minimal tools and live in a very rural area.

Finally got the vehicle back! They replaced the MAF sensor and the air filter. They said the fuel system was operating normally. I would have thought that a MAF would have thrown a code, but I guess not. Regardless, thank you for your input on the issue!

Hi,

Thanks for the update. In most cases, the MAF will set a code, but here is the thing. Often times sensors will not be operating properly, but they still send a signal. If the PCM receives a signal, it doesn't know if it's right or wrong. Thus, it may not set a code.
