White smoke from hood and tail pipe, battery cut off three times in the last week, a little shaking, temp gage keeps going to hot to cold or to hot really fast.

What do you mean by "battery cut off"? Did it go dead and you needed a jump-start? Did the van lose electrical power while you were driving?

Have you checked for coolant leaks? Is the radiator full? Is this a full-size "B" van or a minivan? When you have an engine running problem, please list the engine size.
