Engine shuts off while driving

My car is switching off whole l am driving and the engine light is on.
Sometimes it just switches off and l restart it and it starts. l do not know what could be the problem.

First, if the check engine light is on, you really need to have it scanned to identify diagnostic trouble codes. They will point us in the right direction. Here is a quick video showing how it is done:

I realize most people don't own a scanner, but most parts stores will do it for free or lend/rent you a scanner. So that needs done.

Next, does the engine always start right back up or are there times you have to wait for it to cool off?
