You need someone to actually look at it to see what the problem is. A large pin may have come loose in the differential. That could cause the symptoms you described but there's many other things to check.
We don't get involved with costs here because there's way too many variables. We don't know if this problem has a simple cause, it needs a new transmission, what the labor rates are in your area, etc. We don't even know the engine size or whether it's an automatic or manual transmission. No idea if transmission fluid leakage is involved. We don't know what "stopped" means. Did the engine stall? Did the car stop because the brakes locked up?
