Front wheel bearing grinding, while driving the car stopped moving?

The driver's front wheel bearing had been grinding for a while.
I was driving and it stopped accelerating had to coast to the side of road.

Okay, the description sounds like the typical JATCO CVT failure. That is the transmission, and they tend to fail internally. There are places that rebuild them while others simply replace them with a remanufactured unit. That would explain the grinding. If it were a bearing failure the car wouldn't have coasted, those tend to fail then lock up and break multiple parts. The only way to know for sure would be to get the car on a lift and see if the front hub has failed or the axle has sheared off. However, the grinding and no a lack of motion on those is commonly the CVT.
