Car starts sometimes and when it does cuts off soon as put in gear

Why is it hard to start? When it starts it runs hard and then when I put in gear it cuts off.

Try cleaning throttle plate on both sides and IAC hole with choke cleaner. if it continues scan for codes and check fuel pressure with a gauge auto parts rent it. See link.
