The first thing I would do is lift the hood and use a flashlight to look for mouse/rat droppings, they can get on top of the engine and nest, especially the intake manifold valve cover area. You will need to remove the engine cover which just pulls/pops off with no tools. If found, use warm water and soap to wash and then the garden hose to rinse the waste away. Allow the engine to dry in the sun completely before starting. Then I would change out the cabin air filter. Here is a video and the location and how to do it.

Please upload a short video in your response of the problem, so I can see what's going on

Do you think I need to change the engine filter as well?
I’m still waiting for the air cabin filter to be delivered from Amazon
Today I will open the engine cover as you suggested, which will probably freak me out if I see mouse droppings but oh well!!
I really appreciate your help. I will keep you posted.

Yep, they like the warm engine, yes you can get a new engine air filter which is a good maintenance measure as well. It wont do anything for the smell but the engine will appreciate it. IF you can upload a short video or image of the discovery.

Thank you so much!
I was able to change the air cabin filter using the one you recommended and by following your video.
It worked!!
No more smell.
I cannot thank you enough.
I also purchased an engine filter which I will keep for now as the car is at 47,000 mile and I don't want to press my luck at trying more than one thing at a time.
You are wonderful!

Best regards,

Denise
