So, the motor blew got a new motor put in now the mechanic said car starts up fine everything is working as needed, but then he says it shuts off after 30 seconds with no warning. He thinks it's electrical or may need a new computer. Could it be the throttle body plugs being in backwards?

Hi,

If the computer was okay prior, that isn't a likely cause.

When it stalls, does it start right back up? Also, has he checked to see if there are diagnostic trouble codes that may help direct us?

My first thought is a faulty crankshaft position sensor. Take a look through this link and let me know if it mirrors what has been described to you:

Let me know.

Yes, it starts right back up. I was thinking maybe the engine control module. It is supposed to be towed in the morning to a different place that deals with Toyota. Also thinking they may have put the plugs in the wrong spot on the throttle body maybe they have the air one in the fuel plug and the fuel plug in the air, could that make it shut off?

Hi,

Wow, I hope that isn't the case. LOL When it stalls, does it act like someone simply turned the key off or more like it is slowly turning off?

Also, did you have a chance to check the link related to the crankshaft position sensor I attached above?

Let me know.

Take care,

Joe

No, I didn't but I will. And when it shuts off it's like someone turned the key off. We bought a new crankshaft position sensor today. They are going to put it in on Thursday or Friday.

Hi,

Thank you for the update. I hope that takes care of the issue. Here is a link (if needed) that explains in general how one is replaced:

https://www.2carpros.com/articles/crankshaft-angle-sensor-replacement

Also, I attached the directions specific to your vehicle below. It is a little bit of a pain because you need to remove the timing belt cover to access it.

Let me know if this helps or if you have other questions.

Take care,

Joe

Update on the Toyota: it was in fact the crankshaft position sensor. They put a new one in and fired right up running smoothly. Need an alignment done now because the steering wheel is sideways but that is simple. Thank you so much for your advice, saved a lot of money for tow and diagnostic didn't have to do any of that. I'm beyond happy for my son. Thank you, thank you. God bless.
