Low oil pressure can certainly cause the engine to run hotter due to increased friction. If the engine is hot enough, it can thin the oil enough to cause the light to come on, too. Confirm that the engine is overheating and it's not a gauge problem first. If it is truly overheating, fix that problem first and determine if the oil pressure light stays off.
