My car makes metal clanking noise when I drive

Can you try to get a video of this noise? Based on what you are describing it sounds like there is a heat shield making contact with a rotating mass. The only other thing I can think is a backing plate is making contact with a rotor.

However it is hard to try to figure out a noise without hearing it. So if you can have someone drive the vehicle slowly and you just walk next to it in a straight line so we can get an idea of what the noise is, that will really help.

Without that, the best suggestion I can give to try and figure this out is to put the vehicle on jack stands so that you can lay under the vehicle or at least next to it while you put it in gear and have the components spin so you can see what is making contact.

Hi, thank you for your help! Please hear the below sound. It's like a rattling noise when driving. this was filmed when the car was driving slowly. When I hit the accelerator the rattling gets louder.

Awesome. I can almost guarantee that is an exhaust shield rattling. The way to find this is get a rubber hammer and lay under the vehicle with it off and cooled down, then start tapping the exhaust pipes starting as close to the engine as possible. You may just see if hanging there but as you get closer you will start to hear the rattle. It will not be as loud but you should find it. You do not need to hit this hard, just tap it so that you get a vibration in the pipe so that it will rattle the shield.

I would be shocked if that is not it so we need to start with this and go from there. Thanks

Hi, thank you for your help. I tried tapping everywhere and I don't hear the rattle. I've realized the rattling/clanking gets louder when I'm steering/turning to the left and it is much quieter when steering/turning towards the right. Would that change your guess for the cause?

It doesn't change what I think it is in that it is a loose piece of metal rattling on anther piece of metal. It may not be an actual heat shield on the exhaust but this would be the most likely and most common cause of this noise.

So if there are no heat shields rattling then we need to try and use this same technique on as many components we can find. Starting with the backing plates or dust shields that are part of the braking system. This would fit with the idea that it makes more noise when turning.

These dust shields are basically there to protect the brake rotor from things kicking up from the road and try to limit the brake dust from getting on the suspension components. If they are loose or bent they will make contact with the rotor and cause this noise. Normally they make a scarping noise but we need to check them.
