Car loses power but RPM's go high

We can drive it around for a little while and it's fine but if we go over 40 mph the rpm's shoot to 5 and then the car barely goes.. After that if we let it sit for a while we can drive it again and it acts okay. What could this be?

Hello,

Is this a stick shift or automatic transmission? if it is a stick it sounds like the clutch is worn out and if so here a video that shows the clutch job being done on a different car but the operation is the same:
