The car has issues selecting neutral to first requiring force and occasionally down gears from second to first etc. However, if I put it back into neutral disengage the clutch and reengage it the gear goes in fine. And reverse occasionally crunches. any ideas?

Sounds like a bent shift fork inside the transmission or the linkage on top of the transmission is bent. External linkage is easy to check. Have someone shift while you watch the linkage for binding. If you find nothing then it is likely a shift fork. Those require the transmission be pulled to get to them.
