Car emission system light glows on

My car emission control light glows continuously. Sometimes it glows & goes off or stays for a longer time.
When the it glows on the speedometer & milege indicator stops working.What could be the issue,please suggest

have it canned for codes and check fuel pressure with a gauge to see why it's being put on.
