Car shuts off after it idles up on its own

My vehicle listed above won't keep running after it warms up. We've replaced the radiator, the fans, fuel pump, crankshaft sensor, spark plugs, wires, and gasket purge valve for emissions. Cleaned the CMU out. We have nowhere else to go after this. We noticed that the spark plug wires that we bought are arcing.

If the spark plug wires are arcing, that is causing the problem. Where are they arcing from? Are you able to move them away from the area to see if the vehicle runs better? Are all the wires doing this?

Let me know. The arcing wires certainly are causing misfires. Let's get that fixed and then see what other issues there are. Also, make sure the plug wires are installed to the correct cylinders. The firing order needs to be correct. See pic 1 below.

Let me know what you find.

Take care,

Joe

When you say you cleaned the CMU, which part are you referring too? I am just not familiar with that acronym.

The most likely cause of this is the idle control device.

https://www.2carpros.com/articles/idle-air-control-valve-service

I attached the info below on how it works on this vehicle but also the testing that we need to run through in order to confirm this is a throttle control issue.

You will need to check the fuel pressure so here is a guide that will help with this as well:

https://www.2carpros.com/articles/how-to-check-fuel-system-pressure-and-regulator

Please run through this flow chart below and let us know where you end up with it and that should get us on the right path.

I am concerned that you are seeing arcing of the plugs so we may have an issue but were they doing this from the start or did they start that after you replaced them?

Please let us know if you have questions on this. Thanks

Hi, since I posted my question I went to AutoZone and have them do a check. The first thing we replaced was the cam sensor and we are yet to replace the coolant temperature sensor which is the codes that they read. We want to know if the coolant temperature sensor can make the car idle up and shut off? Because it controls the computer for the injector system supposedly. Thank you so much for all your help.

It is unlikely. The coolant temperature sensor can cause idle issues but it won't cause it to shut off. However, the easiest way to check this is to unplug it and run the vehicle. If it runs normally then it is the issue as the PCM will switch to a preprogramed set of data when it looses a signal from the sensor.

Let us know what happens with that and we can move on. Thanks

Hi,

I'm glad to hear you got it fixed. The PCM receives a signal from the temp sensor and that info is used to determine the air/fuel mixture. It can have a very negative effect on how the vehicle runs.

For example, if the ECT is telling the computer it is neg 40 degrees F, the computer will make the fuel mixture very rich so the engine will start. If you are in a warm area, the fuel mixture will cause it to stall or run poorly due to the excessively rich mixture.

Regardless, I'm glad to hear it's running properly. Please feel free to come back anytime in the future. You are always welcome here.

Take care,

Joe
