Check for spark at the spark plug boots. If your getting spark then check for fuel pressure.
These S-10 have a history of fuel pump issue and injector issues. Make sure there is fuel in the tank too because the fuel level sensors in the fuel tank also have a history of failing.
Most auto part suppliers offer a tool rental program.
Test the fuel system by connecting the fuel pressure gauge to the service port on the fuel line. Turn the key on but dont crank the engine. Is there pressure around 55-62psi? There should be. Attempt to start and watch the fuel pressure gauge. Does the fuel pressure decrease?
Sometime pounding on the bottom of the fuel tank can cause a fuel pump to start to work.
My bet is a fueling issue because from what you said. Engine stalled on the free way, can get it to restart.
Try the above thing I said and get back to me.
