The only thing that makes sense with this is we have a fluid issue or a possible valve body issue.
So, let's start with checking the fluid and making sure it is still the proper level.

If it is or after you fill it, and it still does this, then we need to check the pressure when you are in park, and then when you go to drive.
More than likely there is a leak in the manual valve or another part of the valve body because when you move the shifter from park to drive, you pass by reverse and the valve may be applying reverse and drive at the same time. This would cause it to stall.
However, when you are in Neutral and go to drive, you have already past R and that will allow drive to engage.
I attached the test we need to run through in order to figure out if this is happening.
