Couple possibilities. One, dirty or failing IAC, Try cleaning it and the throttle body with some throttle body cleaner. You would be amazed at how much crud builds up in there.
Another item could be a sticking EGR valve if equipped. If it sticks party open the exhaust gas will lean out the mix and shut the engine down.
