I just got the timing belt replaced. Car runs very good except now seems to sometimes shut off, especially on the freeway when slowing down due to traffic and clutch is depressed. Five speed Manual. Mechanic insists it's not the timing belt repair. Any helpful suggestions?

Hi,

The belt itself wouldn't be causing this. However, I need a bit more information. Do you mean when you depress the clutch (engine at idle) it stalls?

The first thing I would check is if there are any engine vacuum leaks. There were a lot of parts taken apart for the replacement of the timing belt. There is a chance something was left disconnected or was damaged.

Take a look through this link. It explains how to check for leaks. Try this and let me know what you find

Also, it would be a good idea to see if there are any diagnostic trouble codes stored. This vehicle has an OBD1 system that doesn't require a scanner to retrieve codes. Follow this link and let me know if there are any codes are found.

One other thing. Take a look through this link and let me know if anything helps.

Let me know what you find.

Take care,
