The belt itself wouldn't be causing this. However, I need a bit more information. Do you mean when you depress the clutch (engine at idle) it stalls?
The first thing I would check is if there are any engine vacuum leaks. There were a lot of parts taken apart for the replacement of the timing belt. There is a chance something was left disconnected or was damaged.

Also, it would be a good idea to see if there are any diagnostic trouble codes stored. This vehicle has an OBD1 system that doesn't require a scanner to retrieve codes. Follow this link and let me know if there are any codes are found.
