Black smoke tells me it is running rich. Too much gas. Has the check engine light come on? Have you checked the O2 sensors?

Please understand that it is a federal law that your vehicle has catalytic converters. With that said, NO NO NO. The O2 sensors need to read what is happening in the exhaust system to tell the computer how to adjust the fuel mixture. Most likely, they have gone into what is called a closed loop and the computer is running the engine as rich as it can.

If you were my customer, I would recommend that you replace the catalytic converter and then the O2 sensors if they are not there.
