Can I change just one rod bearing?

I did a test on a earlier post and determined that a one rod bearing is bad. Depending on the condition of the crankshaft and rod, can I just replace the one bad rod bearing. I see video's and herd of people just dropping the oil pan and just replacing the bottom half of the rod bearing.

Not likely. Why did the bearing wear out? Did it happen due to lack of lubrication? Did it happen due to excessive mileage? Did it damage the crankshaft? All of these question matter. I don't see too many scenarios where that would be an isolated problem with just one bearing. Chances are the whole engine is severely worn internally and just slapping a bearing would be a band aid that likely wouldn't survive.

Thanks for your advice. I didn't think just replacing only the bearing would work. A friend was trying to convince me it would. It will be time for a tear down and inspection before rebuilding or a replacement engine.
