Tried three different times removing and adjusting the cam gears I even used clamps where the gears won't move marks. Are dead on then after the first rotation of the camshaft. The marks end up about half inch before the marks. Wish I'd have taken a picture before removing the belt for the fourth time. What am I doing wrong? I've followed the the example picture that were sent. So there is a click just as the marks line up. If not very careful it will click and be a little bit past the marks. So I've tried hard to stop the camshaft before it hits that click. Can I bend valves doing this? Thanks. JC

Good morning,

Yes you can. Valve damage can result if the timing is not correct.

After you align the marks, do the marks stay aligned like in the picture?

They do not after one rotation of the crankshaft they fall about 1/4 to 1/2 in. Before the marks.

I have tried again this time the cam marks look pretty good but now the crankshaft mating marks are off by about 30 to 40 degrees past the marks after one rotation. I got a question for you when you turn the camshaft sprockets do you stop before the click
because it's hard too do. Just as you come up on the marks just a hair and there's a click and you've gone past the marks? JC Oh, yes it's raining so I had to quit, I'll get you the pictures of the marks.

Okay. Is that with the crank on its mark?

The belt is way too loose it should be taunt between the two gears.

To loose? I thought the tentioner bolt stayed loose for two rotations and then turn exhaust side cam to S and tighten? So what to do? You're the pro.

No, not at all.

You align the marks and release the tensioner. Then you hand turn the motor and the marks should all line up.

Never rotate it without the tensioner released.

You can see the crankshaft gear is about 30 degrees past the 12 o'clock point where it should be.

Release the belt again and move the crank back one tooth. Then release the tensions so it is tight again and rotate and check it again.

I'm not sure about what you mean one tooth loosen the belt turn the crankshaft gear one tooth or back to the mark on the oil pump.

I mean you need to make the belt very slack again and move the crank gear to line up with the mark on the oil pump without moving the belt and the cams.

Absolutely. It needs to be set in the installed position. If all the marks line up then you are good to go for assembling the front cover.

I see now what I was doing wrong the tentioner had to be tightened way more than I had it. That sucker is tight now and all marks are good.. I guess it's time to start it or see if it starts.

Yes, you need to hook up the spring on the tensioner and loosen the bolts and let the spring set the tension.

Okay, the spring is attached I put a cats paw behind the tentioner and put pressure on the tentioner while tightening the bolt down. It's got very little give at the top between the cam gears and the tention side of the belt. It's being kind of hard to start too and the exhaust side cam gear is a little before the mark where it should be. Could that make it hard to start? I noticed when I rotated the motor by hand and aligned the marks that way When I got the key it started right up. Could it be I need to loosen the belt back up and do the cam gears and all again? Crankshaft gear is dead on intake side is dead on but exhaust is a little off.

It is off one tooth. Need to reset it exactly. That is why it does not start easily.

No, if you turn the crank, the it will all be off.

Just turn the cam 1 tooth inside the belt.

I took the belt back off I couldn't turn the heat now I gotta start all over this is just about impossible to do without two people. If I had someone to hold the gears while I put the belt on it would be a lot easier to do. I tried to turn the heat without removing the belt but it wasn't happening.. At least I know now how to do it but I gotta have some help. Thanks Roy.
