How do I get the timing chain tensioners to go back in? Is there a way of doing this without taking the timing chain cover off?

Replacing head gaskets!!!
I pressed slightly on the tesioners but they seemed tough to go back in.

You will need to remove the cover. There is a lever that is used to unlock them, and a pin is shoved in the hole to lock them fully retracted. When that pin is removed, then they spring into place. The pin can be a cotter pin, nail, anything, not a special tool.
