1989 Cadillac Fleetwood V8 Two Wheel Drive 135000 miles

How do I find out the repair codes on the car itself. My "check engine" light is on and I can not aquire the codes via the climate control. Please help thanks

is engine a 4.5L? if yes look under dash at steering collumn find a black connector with two rows of terminals. If it is there jumper between the last two terminals top row. MIL should start to flash codes. Does climate show a 1.8.8 or 8.8.8.?
