1994 Cadillac El Dorado car running hot and overheating

I have a 94 cadillac eldorado and my husband just recently changed the thermostat before going out of town. Half way down the road the car jerks and the computer starts reading check coolant level, engine overheat, 295 coolant temp, stop engine. Can anyone tell me what this may be? thanks.

did you ck the coolant level? was it low?
