Transmission problem
1988 Cadillac El Dorado V8 Front Wheel Drive Automatic

I have 2 88 Eldorado's that both have the same problem. The driver info says "Gear Select Problem".
Can someone tell me what needs to be corrected?

It reads that on the info center, what does the prndl indicator on the cluster show. I would suspect it is a fault with an invalid signal from the park/neutral switch.

Thanks gstacey for your reply.
On both cars on the instrument panel the prndl shows all have a box around the letters at the same time.
IE: same outline around all at same time as there is suppose to be when it is in a specific gear.

The one car starts, runs, shifts OK even though it has this problem.
The second car now will not start, for awhile it would start in Nuetral buy not in Park.
It also reads slightly different on the info panel.
It says "Gear Select Problem 27"
The first one just says "Gear Select Problem"
Thanks

I would suspect in both cases, the vehicles don't know for sure which gear they are in. The no start is probably due to the vehicle seeing something other than park or neutral. You may be able to get it to start by moving the prndl switch around a bit as there is some adjustment, it could even be loose.

Thanks for the reply.
The 1st Eldorado will still start while in Park.
The 2nd Eldorado will no longer start in any gear or even when the shifter is moved around while trying to start it.
Question on either is How can I correct this?
Thanks

I would say in the case of the first, replace the PRNDL switch. On the second, I would suspect a PRNDL as well.
