Car doesn't shift smooth and makes noise when put in gear?

Is the check engine light on, there may be a fault that commands maximum line pressure. If it is making noise, something may be wrong inside the transmission. Some checks would include the fluid level and condition, and possibly removing the pan to check for debris.
