First, never chase down a problem by throwing money at it. This never works.
I'm not trying to lecture, but this will save you money next time.
I'll need to know where your needle is pointing on the gauge when it runs warm. Because this is normal for the engine temp to increase when the a/c is turned on, especially at idle. Then when you begin driving, the temp should come down a bit. And the hotter it is outside, the hotter the car will run. But it should never go over 3/4 to the red line.
If your engine temp is running that hot, then have the cooling system pressure tested, as it could be something as simple as the radiator cap is bad and isn't holding pressure, to there being a blockage in the system. (Air, rust, etc.)
