My mother has a 2000 Cadillac Deville DHS. She had to have the alternator replaced approx. 2 years ago and now is being told it needs to be replaced again. This repair will cost around $1700.00 and I want to know what could be causing the alternator to fail?

There are all sorts of things that can kill an alternator.
Any type of leak where the fluid get on it.
A bad battery, or corroded battery cables.
I could have been a poorly rebuilt unit that was put on the first time.

You should probably mention to the shop that does the work, that you had it replaced 2 years ago, and ask that they keep their eyes open for anything that may have caused it to fail so soon.
