It is part of the SIR system, more specifically the passenger presence system. On your CTS, I believe it is part of the passenger seat cushion. It's purpose is to evaluate the weight on the passenger seat, and enable or 'suppress' passenger airbag operation, based on predetermined value. I believe(don't quote me) that anything under 50 lbs should not enable passenger airbag operation.

The other guy was correct in the info but are you having an issue with the PPS? If it has a failure code it needs to be replaced. I have had a few with the code and again the only cure is a replacement cushion and module combination
