Is the check engine light on. Inspect the shift solenoids by removing the pan and 'dogleg' shaped screen. There is a filter in between the solenoids, on the early style it wasn't retained and eventually would push out and break the solenoid. A new solenoid kit will include a bracket and longer valve body bolt. The lower valve body will need removed if you need to service solenoids.
