how do i know what scanner is best for my car.

Word of mouth, product research. It all depends on what you want in a scanner, and how much you want to spend. If you are just concerned about diagnostic trouble codes, then a code reader would work, although these are generally just applicable to ECM(powertrain) codes. The more bells and whistles you want, the more it will cost.
