Is it necessary to remove the cylinder heads in order to replace the oil cooler?

Not necessary, after upper and lower intake are removed, you need to remove the large nuts that fasten the cooler to the cover. remove the cover bolts, and remove the cooler in two pieces(cover, and cooler).
