1997 Cadillac Catera steering does not respond

i was backing out of my drive way when i heard a clunk..and then it feels the the steering wheel is diconnected from the wheels..i can turn the wheel completly to the left or right and the wheels do nothin.

Hi:
Open the hood and check the steering shaft coming through the fire wall. Also, check under the front to check for broken tie rods, pitman arm...
