Building up pressure and overheating

Update: asked the question while sitting on the side of the road waiting for the car to cool down. when I just checked it the radiator hose was flat because of all the suction. so definitely thinking wrong radiator cap but that still doesn't solve my problem because I just put that radiator cap on there because the last one wasn't working. but it wasn't doing that either it just was filling the overflow reservoir until it was spraying out. please help.

The only place pressure like that would be from is a bad head gasket. In normal operation the system runs under about 12-15 psi. and shouldn't overheat. I would start by doing a pressure test and a combustion gas test.

You can usually get the test equipment at many parts stores as loaner or rental tools.
From there you would need to determine which way to proceed.

I thought head gasket too, but didn't see any coolant in the oil. I will do that that though. thank you

It depends on where it fails as to whether it goes into the oil. it's possible as well that it's a crack in the head or block. They would all show up the same way. Testing gives you a place to start.
