Engine Cooling problem
1967 Buick Skylark V8 Two Wheel Drive Automatic

MY CAR OVERHEATED AND WAS LEAKING WATER FROM THE WATERPUMP, I LET IT COOL DOWN AND TRIED TO PUT COOLANT AND SOME STOP A LEAK TO TEMPORARILY SEAL THE HOLE. MY PROBLEM IS THAT WHEN I TRIED STARTING IT, IT BACKFIRED AND WOULDN'T TURN OVER ALL THE WAY. IT WOULD CRANK, BUT THEN SHUT OFF. I WANT TO MAKE SURE I DIDN'T BURN UP MY ENGINE. I DIDN'T HEAR ANY TAPPING OR UNUSUAL NOISES WHILE I CRANKED IT OVER.

Stop leak will not help with a water pump leak. It needs to be changed with a new or rebuilt unit. The best thing to do is wait and see if it will start when cold. It could have been just from being overheated. If it still backfires then check for a timing chain problem. Or water could have just got on the distributor cap as your distributor is in the front. That could also cause a backfire as well.
