security light

I own a 1997 riviera sc.Mileage 121022 sometimes when i go to start my car i turn the key and the security light comes on and it won't start. The light stays on for three minutes.When the three minutes are up light goes off. Sometimes it will happen repeatedly. Other times it will start like a brand new car. What can i do to solve this problem?

Hey David,
Is there a little resistor in the actual key itself? (kinda looks like a tiny metal strip in the key) Let me know and we'll go from there!

Yes there is a resistor on the key.I had the key checked out and the key was fine.
