Why is the factory paint job on the 97 buick peeling off?
I don't know, but I'll tell you a story that I heard.
IN the mid 90s GM changed the type of paint used, but for the most part they still used the same process of applying.
They would make a car shell, prime it then store it until they were ready to make the finished product. It could be a couple of months before they brought the shell back to give the finish coat & assemble the car.
With the old paint, that worked just fine, but with the new paint, the finish coat needed to be applied within 48 hrs to have proper adhesion to the primer. Since it could be weeks before the finish coat went on, the primer & finish didn't fuse well & we have a large fleet of vehicles out there that are showing delamination between the paint surfaces.
The auto companies have addressed the problem in later model years.
Now, is this true or just an old shop tale? I don't know.
