Noises problem
1995 Buick Riviera 6 cyl Front Wheel Drive Automatic 100xxx miles

I have a '95 Buick Riv 3.8L S/C that was having a grinding noise on start-up and kept going. P/S pump was leaking, wet all over the remaining pulleys and front crossmember and steering gear. I replaced the pump and bled and re-filled the p/s fluid system. Now on start-up, all is quiet for about 5 seconds (or until idle stabilizes) and then the grinding starts up again. I could rev the engine and/or during driving, the noise goes away, until you stop at a red light and the noise would return. I could put my wrench on the tensioner for the p/s pump and alternator and play with the tension and the noise would go away. I replaced the tensioner, but with no affect on the noise. Removal of supercharger/waterpump/a/c belt has no affect on noise. Removal of both belts eliminates the noise.

Check the harmonic balancer rubber for cracks and/or deterioration. When the rubber breaks down and comes loose from the pulley part of the assembly, the noise is terrible! A new balancer fixes this noise issue.
