1991 Buick Riviera Recharging Air conditioning

My compressor is not coming on when trying to recharge the system. The service A/C system light is on, does this have to be reset before the compressor will kick on. I have jumped the low freon switch and it still does nothing. The light came on when trying to use the defrosters this winter. Thanks

as you approach the correct amount of coolant when filling the system. the compressor cycle will be shorter and shorter untill it stays on, but it must be filling up, for the compressor clutch to kick on
