The fuel filter is located on the frame rail on the drivers side under the drivers seat. You will need to raise the car up safely before you begin.

Engine cuts out when I step on throttle too hard but idles fine.

a Fuel pressure test should be done first to see if you are getting a drop in pressure under heavy throttle. And also scan the ECM for trouble codes. even if the check light isn't on right now. let us know what you find. This could be a sensor issue too

If you decide you would like do this yourself you can purchase an inexpensive fuel pressure gauge online from sites like Amazon.com.

'vehicle is "coughing" as I initially accelerate and if I give it gas slowly it runs just fine. A friend suggested changing the fuel filter. Where is it and how doI change it?

Before you replace anything, take the car to a nationally recognized parts store and have them scan it for trouble codes. It's most likely something other than the fuel filter. The filter on this vehicle is in the gas tank. There may be an in line filter under the car aprox where the driver's seat is located along the frame. It will need unbolted from the frame.

Let me know what you find.
