Electrical problem
2004 Buick Rendezvous 6 cyl Front Wheel Drive Automatic 95k miles

My speedometer is malfunctioning. It moves normally when i start it, then it gets stuck at a certain point while I'm driving. Yesterday i was doing 70 mph... while parking. When i turn the car off it stays at some point. Then it takes a couple of key turns to get the needle to move back to 0 mph in a ratcheting motion. I believe it has something to do with the stepper motors. I want to open my instrument panel up but I don't know where to start. I read somewhere that I may have to remove the entire dashboard. I'm a do-it-yourself kind of guy because I'm cheap. The dealer wants to charge me $450.

To my knowledge there are no aftermarket companies that sell internal parts for GM instrument panels. Even if you went to the parts dept. they have no pictures of internal parts.

Removing the cluster is not as hard as some have made it out to sound, but does require a sequential process coming apart and going together.

Delphi manufactures these clusters and will repair them if sent in. We have always given it to the dealer parts dept. to have this done, but it may be possible to send it direct if you do some web surfing.

Once the cluster is repaired the Body Control Module will need to be set up to communicate with it or the vehicle will not start. This will require the use of a GM Tech II Scan tool or on-board SPS programmer with BCM setup software.

Good luck,
