My warning lights on the dash remain one. The "AWD disabled" and "anti-lock brakes" indicators remain on even after turning the engine off and restarting the vehicle. I took the SUV in for a diagnostic at a local service station and was told the sensor was bad and to replace it would involve taking off the wheel hub, where the bearing are located, and replacing a whole assembly unit(s) at a cost of over $500. This does not make sense to me. I have my doubts as to the mechanic's ability. I think he was Vietnamese and did not communicate well. My question is: "Is it safe to drive? What could be the problem? And, is what the mechanic told me true?" Please advise.

The two systems work together. As far as what he is saying, it is possible. However, the sensor may be good and have a bad or corroded connection. What I recommend is to take the car to a nationally recognized parts store and have them scan the computer for codes. Most will do it for free. When the do it, ask them what code they found and let me know so I can better assist you.

As far as what he said, it is possible. Also, if the AWD and ABS lights are on, it should be safe to drive. Make sure the brake fluid is full. However, both systems will not work if the lights are on. If the brakes still feel good, they should continue to work just without the ABS.

Let me know what you find or if you have other questions.
