2002 Buick Rendezvous temperature guage

I was driving and the temp gauge went to HOT the light came on to warn me so I pulled over the radiator was full but looked like clear water with chunks of dirt in it...I put anti freeze in to it and the temp gauge is fluctuating back and forth...does it sound like i just need a radiator flush?

I would recommend flushing the entire system and refilling it with new coolant. Also, I recommend replacing the thermostat when doing this.
