2002 Buick Regal problems with transmisson shifts...

I have a 2002 Buick Regal GS and when under light throttle conditions the transmission shifts fine. However, when I give alot of gas it practically freezes after reving to a high RPM. When it finally shifts [after I let up on the gas] I hear a disturbing "clanking" sound. It only seems to happen in 1st otr when I kick it into overdrive. Please help! TY
