2001 Buick Regal service engine soon

This light came on and my car was put on a scope. EGR valve came up. I had it replaced. Does the new part have to be "reprogrammed" in order for my service engine light to stay off?

A scanner is needed to turn light off. Was it off after repair then came back on?

We just replaced the egr valve aand didn't do anything else.
